SEPTIC SYSTEMS EXPLAINED

Underground waterline installation site with a small backhoe, pipes, and construction tools in a grassy area surrounded by trees.

If you live in a city, wastewater is sent through underground pipes to a treatment plant. On rural properties, acreages, and farms, that process happens right on your land.

A septic system safely collects wastewater from your home, separates solids from liquids, and allows treated water to filter naturally through the soil before returning to the groundwater. Because every property has different soil, slope, and space constraints, septic systems are not one-size-fits-all.

That’s why proper site and soil evaluation is the most important first step. The quality and depth of your soil determines what type of system will work — and installing the right system from the start helps prevent backups, failures, and costly repairs down the road.

Our job is to assess your land, design a system that fits your property, and install it properly so it works reliably for years to come. You don’t need to know the technical details — just that it’s done right.

OUR STORY

JC1 is a family-run septic system design and installation business serving rural properties across Southern Alberta. With over 25 years of hands-on experience, Jeff has spent his career working on acreages and farms, installing septic systems and operating heavy equipment with precision and care.

Having grown up on a farm, Jeff understands rural land, soil conditions, and the importance of doing things properly the first time. He’s known for being skilled on a backhoe, easy to work with, and taking pride in leaving every job done right.

At JC1, we believe that if you’re happy with the work, we’re happy too. Our goal is to provide safe, long-lasting septic systems through professional workmanship, clear communication, and friendly service you can trust around your home.

OUR PROCESS

  • Step 1

    SITE & SOIL EVALUATION

We start with an on-site visit to assess your property. This includes digging test pits to evaluate soil conditions and reviewing property constraints such as available space and layout. Soil testing is the most important step in determining what type of septic system will work for your land.

  • Step 2

    DESIGN & PERMITS

Once soil test results are assessed, we design a septic system tailored to your property. We also prepare the required homeowner information package and submit the permit application on your behalf, ensuring everything meets Alberta regulations.

  • Step 3

    INSTALLATION

After permits are approved, we schedule the installation. Most systems take 2-3 days on site and include excavation, septic tank installation, pump installation (if required), and septic field construction. We work efficiently while making sure everything is installed properly and safely.

Installation is completed when the ground is unfrozen, typically May through October.

“Jeff was extremely knowledgeable in the backhoe and sewer field industry.

He was efficient, timely and cost-effective. Currently, I have had my sewer field for over 10 years without any issues. That being said, I have confidence that Jeff would be helpful if any issues did arise."

  • Soil quality, texture, and structure determine the amount of wastewater a septic field can absorb before it becomes overloaded. For example, layers of clay-rich soil can slow and restrict water movement more than sandy soil, which could result in flooding and pooling above your septic field.
